Lembongan Island: an abundance of marine life

The lesser-know islands of Lembongan and Ceningan, just off the southeast coast of Bali, are gaining popularity as diving locations and areas for pleasure cruises. The variety of currents feeding the channels between the islands supports a varied and abundant array of marine life, including larger species not found elsewhere around Bali. Shallow reefs and excellent visibility mean that diving in this area can be enjoyed by all skill levels.

The sleepy village pace makes them ideal for visitors seeking tranquility away from the busier resorts of Bali. Secluded palm-fringed sandy coves are easily accessible, and there are no cars. The irritating beach hawkers of Bali are also thankfully absent.

A 400m long narrow wooden bridge is currently under construction to connect the islands of Ceningan and Lembongan. This offers excellent views of the distant Mt. Agung on Bali, as well as the seaweed farming which constitutes the main local industry.

Pleasure cruises depart from Bali and include Bali Hai Cruises, Bounty Cruises, Wakalouka, Nikki Adventure and numerous private charter boats. All reputable dive operators offer diving trips to various locations around these islands. Accommodation varies from simple beach bungalows to star-rated hotels.
